Seeing the exhibit (which anyone with an interest in Middle Eastern history owes themselves to check out if they're in NYC) convinced me that SoI isn't just an exciting, beautiful, challenging game of Civ4, but it's the closest a Civ mod can come to being a work of scholarship. I must have thought "hey, I remember this from Sword of Islam" dozens of times while I was in there: the Samanid pottery shards, the illuminated Shahnahmeh from the Safavid dynasty, the golden astrolabe made by a Cairene artisan for a Yemeni aristocrat, the engravings of Ottoman galleons, etc etc. Basically, you nailed the distinctive historical identity of the overall time period and region as well as the individual empires. I think one of the main reasons the mod works so well is that it applies Rhye's stability mechanic to distinct political entities, like the Fatamid Caliphate or the Kingdom of Gujarat, rather than to amorphous cultural-linguistic groups like the Arabians or the Persians or the Indians. While I love the original RFC, I never really understood what was being simulated when India or China "collapsed". But in SoI, it's clearly either the wholesale destruction of an empire by invaders, or the end state of a cycle of decline and exhaustion of "group feeling" as described by Ibn Khaldun. In fact, SoI is an excellent accompaniment to a reading of Ibn Khaldun, illustrating his historiographic principles beautifully. So anyway, cool story bro and sorry for the long post and all that, but I just wanted to thank you for all the work you put into this mod. Oh, and comparing it to Civ V is like comparing Rembrandt to a kindergartner's fingerpainting. Fingerpainting that crashes a lot and has crappy narration. -- Schroedinger's cat is NOT dead. http://sites.google.com/site/youtien/ -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 118.143.20.164
