I think Nintendo also wants to nurture a homebrew development scene of some kind. I'd be surprised if we didn't hear more about all of the above at the Game Developers Conference in March. In the meantime, all I can tell you is that Nintendo's online network is in its infancy and can only improve over time. Gears of War for Xbox 360 pulls off online coop nicely and the upcoming Army of Two seems to revolve around the option. Nintendo has been late out of the gates with its online network for Wii so obviously it may take several more months before it's running along smoothly - most developers are still ignoring the option because they couldn't get access to it earlier.
