"C’mon and slam, and welcome to the jam"
One of the very few PSX hardware games we’d never gotten working was Acclaim
’s NBA Jam Extreme. This game had a large ROM capacity relative to other
games on the hardware and nobody could ever figure out how the ROM banking
was meant to work. Recently we had a sort of miniature breakthrough when
recently added team member Peter Ferrie figured out how to get the game to
boot and show a few screens plus the test menus, but it still didn’t
continue and was nowhere near playable. So armed with the ROM test screen, I
figured out a banking scheme that would allow it to pass, and then worked out
a few extra minor details attempting to run the game. Finally, success!
It turns out that Peter’s hack to get it to boot worked entirely by
accident, but sometimes that kind of dumb luck is all you need when you’re
emulating a game :)
